Getting started with Hysolate

Welcome to Hysolate!

Hysolate is an isolated virtual environment on your computer. Let’s call it your “Hysolate environment.” And let’s call the computer on which Hysolate is installed, your “primary environment.”

  • You may be using a personal computer, and installing Hysolate to access organizational resources. In this case, your Hysolate environment allows you to run applications, access the web, and even connect external hardware that your administrator would not allow in your primary environment.
  • Or perhaps you’re using Hysolate on your organization’s computer, to enable you to perform operations that you are not allowed to perform in the primary environment on that computer - because these operations are either too risky or too sensitive.

This guide introduces you to Hysolate and explains how to use the main Hysolate features. Note that some of the features may behave differently on your computer, depending on the Hysolate policy that is applied by your administrator.

Installing Hysolate

You will receive an email from Hysolate, explaining the registration process and inviting you to download the Hysolate installer and to then install Hysolate.

Hysolate Basics

Hysolate is a super-simplified isolated Windows environment - it has its own taskbar, start-menu, and applications.

Hysolate is a non-persistent environment - it gets reverted to its initial state every time you restart your computer. Data that you save and applications that you install in your Hysolate user-profile will be kept. In contrast, applications that you install outside your Hysolate user-profile will be removed on every computer restart.

Switching to Hysolate and back

To switch to the Hysolate environment, and back to the primary environment, use the following key combinations:

  • If you switch to Hysolate and it is not available, a Hysolate curtain will appear, displaying the Hysolate status.

Hysolate icon

  • The Hysolate icon [] in the Windows notification area also provides you with information about the status of Hysolate. You can click the same Hysolate icon to open the Hysolate Control Panel. Use the Control Panel to display and configure various Hysolate settings.

  • You can right-click the Hysolate icon [] in the Windows notification area to display various other useful Hysolate commands.

Hysolate Network Access

Network access in your Hysolate environment is controlled separately from network access in the primary environment. You may have less restrictions in your Hysolate environment, or alternatively more restrictions, depending on the policy your administrator has set for you.

Applications in Hysolate

Your administrator has selected a set of applications that will be installed in Hysolate. These applications will always be available in Hysolate. There may be additional applications that you can install in Hysolate. Open the Applications page in the Hysolate Control Panel to see what's available. For details, see Applications in Hysolate.

Hysolate Updates

Hysolate is updated automatically from the cloud. By default, when an update is available, it will be installed the next time Hysolate restarts.

Using Hysolate

Defining the display mode

  • All-displays mode displays only one environment at a time - either the primary environment or the Hysolate environment - on all the connected displays.

  • Side-by-side mode displays both the primary environment and the Hysolate environment simultaneously. Each environment is shown on a separate display.

To switch between the display modes, right-click the Hysolate icon [] in the Windows notification area, select "Show Workspace on" and then select "All Displays" or "One Display". [You need at least 2 displays to be able to use the side-by-side mode.]

Copying and Pasting

Depending on the Hysolate policy that your administrator has defined for you, you may be permitted to copy between the environments. Always use Ctrl+V to perform the paste operation.

Transferring content

You may be able to right-click a file and then select Copy to … or Open in … to easily copy the file to the other environment, and to then open the copied file in the other environment.

See the available videos.

URL redirection

If you try to access a website that is not available in one environment, the website may be automatically opened in the other environment in which it is accessible.

Connecting USB devices

When you connect a USB device to your computer, you may be permitted to choose to which environment to connect the device, or the device may be automatically connected to the primary environment - depending on your Hysolate policy.

Printing from Hysolate

You may be able to print from the Hysolate environment to a printer that is connected to the primary environment. It is then not necessary to install any printers in the Hysolate environment. This functionality depends on your Hysolate policy.

The Hysolate Control Panel

You can use the Hysolate Control Panel to display and configure various Hysolate settings. To open the Hysolate Control Panel, click the Hysolate icon [] in the Windows notification area.
